Why It Came Down All at Once
Three behaviors come down on one day, not one at a time, and that was decided before the first Monday.
It held about two weeks, and then it came down all at once. What you took from that was a verdict on your character.
You know the version you tried. Some clear-headed Sunday, the whole new self decided in a single sitting. Earlier mornings. Home by seven. The thing you never say in the meeting, finally said.
I want to give you a different reading of those two weeks. It turns on the shape of what you built, and that shape was decided before the first Monday. Call it the overhaul.
The Fast Part Decays
Start with the fast part, because it's real and because it's what misleads people. A connection between neurons can strengthen in seconds to minutes. That part is quick, and it's measurable.
That fast strengthening decays. It fades unless it becomes something slower and physical, and that second step has conditions of its own.
The conversion is selective. Of the connections that changed, some are kept and others are cleared away. And which ones stay depends on two things: what kept happening, and the state of the circuit at the time, meaning the whole run of wiring that connection belongs to. Keeping works less like a phone saving a photo than like a path worn across a field. Nothing is filed because you decided it mattered. A change that keeps happening, on ground ready to take it, stands a better chance than one that happened once.
All of that is measured at the synapse, the gap where one neuron passes its signal to the next. Most of it comes from animal studies. Carrying it up to an ordinary human week is my extension, not something those measurements show.
OK, Starting Monday…
The overhaul is the reflex to meet something you want to change with a change large enough to feel serious about. Three new behaviors starting Monday. The whole system replaced at once, because a single small adjustment seems too slight to be worth making. Compare the overhaul to how anything alive changes: one part at a time, over many rounds, with most of what gets tried not kept.
So why does it come down all at once? The overhaul is a reasonable instinct and the wrong shape for what actually gets kept. Two weeks at three new behaviors does buy real repetitions, roughly a dozen of each, so some of what those built may well have been kept. But those repetitions are spread thin across three places, and three places is not three chances. It is one structure wearing three names, drawing on the same week and the same person, so the week that takes one of them down tends to take all of them down together. Every count stops at the same low number at the same moment, and a dozen repetitions is, to my eye, a small number to ask a behavior to stand on.

The Size That Can Repeat
So the size of the move comes down to a single test. Can you make it again tomorrow, and again the day after, and again in a week that's going badly?
That test disqualifies almost everything anyone plans on a Sunday, and it admits things that look far too slight to be worth naming. One breath before you reply, where you had planned a new policy on how you communicate. Two words said out loud to name the state you're in, where you had planned a resolution to be more self-aware. The move is deliberately unimpressive. A correction you are faintly embarrassed by is one you can still make on your worst day, which means it can recur.
The article makes the resistance case in the amygdala's language, and states it more firmly than the evidence I work from will carry:

A pattern can be worked on while it's happening, and sometimes for a window afterward, though that window has not been measured in people. Sunday sits outside it either way. On Sunday you have a description of the pattern. On Tuesday at four in the afternoon, with the message on the screen and the reply already forming, you have the pattern itself, and the circuit is in the state the pattern puts it in.
The name does not claim that a small move rewires you in the moment you make it, and I will not put my name to anything that does. No single correction, however well made, delivers the durable part.
My position is that a correction reaching a pattern while the pattern is still there stands a better chance than the same move rehearsed cold. That is what my work is built on.
So the thing to find is one correction, inside a pattern you already know you have, small enough to survive a bad week.
